Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers. – Ephesians 4:29
January has taken on a deeper meaning for me this year. In December, we lost a new member of our fellowship to suicide. I had only known this brother in Christ for a little over a month, yet I loved him deeply. His passing has been a constant reminder of how precious every moment we share truly is. Every conversation, every greeting, every prayer, every act of kindness carries weight we may not fully understand in the moment. Life together is never ordinary; it is sacred.
This loss has impressed upon my heart that every thought, word, and action has the potential to be life-giving and edifying. Every relationship is a gift from God, entrusted to us for care, compassion, and love. We never fully know what burdens someone else is carrying, yet Scripture calls us to bear one another’s burdens and so fulfill the law of Christ. That calling requires presence, patience, and intentional love. It also challenges us not to be so heavenly-minded that we are of no earthly good, nor so numbed by the routines and pressures of this world that we lose sight of the living hope we have in Christ Jesus.
As we reflect on the messages from January, praising God’s greatness, receiving lifelines of shared responsibility, responding to Christ’s call, and growing up into maturity, we are reminded that spiritual awareness is not abstract. It is lived out in how we see one another, care for one another, and show up for one another. Seeing each other matters. Being present matters. Loving well matters. Our lives together must be life-giving so that the good news of Jesus Christ is not drowned out by the noise and pain of this world. Let us continue to grow spiritually aware, holding tightly to the truth that we are never forsaken, loving our neighbors as ourselves, and remembering that every encounter is a precious moment.
